Most changes occur in small increments, some so subtle that they are hardly noticed. But in 2020, there were major disruptions to work, school, and social gatherings. In this project children will create games that require flexible thinking to help them deal with dramatic change and gain a sense of confidence in dealing with it.

Whether reacting to change or working to make it happen, having a growth mindset—a view of self and the world that is based on optimism and accepting one’s own mistakes—is essential. Children will use the CREATE framework which instills can do attitudes and fosters relationships that help people move forward when they face challenges. The game design process teaches how to set goals, identify several paths forward, respond flexibly to unexpected challenges, and succeed.

Fairy tales and folktales provide rich cultural insights and often focus on universal themes such as overcoming barriers, justice, and secret strengths. The life lessons are often presented in whimsical ways. These stories have long oral traditions. The classics have endured for hundreds of years as the elders in each generation pass down the tales again and again. Fairy tales and folktales in print and video versions use the arts to help set the tone and convey the key messages.

Everyone has super powers. What are yours? Consider your special skills, talents, interests, and relationships. Some people’s super powers help them solve problems, make others feel safe, heal and protect people, or show appreciation for how awesome people are! Identifying what makes each person special helps children feel like they have a sense of control over things in their lives. Recognizing children’s super powers builds their confidence and optimism, and this helps them feel ready to face the world and all its ups and downs. In this project, children will identify a personal super power and design art that represents that personal strength.

Birds are some of nature’s finest recycled materials artists. They creatively use natural elements such as sticks, grass, moss, mud, and feathers to build their nests, and sometimes incorporate items discarded by humans such as string, yarn, and plastic. In this project, children  observe and research local birds’ nests and design an innovative habitat that meets the needs of these feathered neighbors.

This #STEAM #ThinkingSheet is perfect for a lesson around biomimicry, recycling, sustainability, or the environment!
