Choice based classroom

    Hey everyone!

I was wondering how you implement "choice based learning" in your classrooms? Do you offer choice options for early finishers, or as centers periodically during the school year? Or are you a full blown choice based teacher? Why did you choose the path you did?

    Thanks in advance!

This is my third year teaching  Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) to my elementary students.  The studios include: Drawing, Painting, Collage, Sculpture, Fiber Arts and Digital Arts.  Other studios may be added throughout the year such as Mask Making, Architecture, Printmaking, Jewelry Making and Clay. During each class, I will be demonstrating a new skill, technique or idea that the students may choose to expand on. I  posted some of these mini lessons on my blog.  Since choice-based art education puts the student in charge of choosing media and subject matter, there will be an extremely variety of projects that come out of the same classroom.

I implemented this after noticing that I was not giving as much choice and voice to my students.  I attended many workshops at NAEA and at the Ohio Art Education conference and was impressed by what I saw presented by TAB teachers.   I notice now that the students are so much more engaged, collaborative, focused and creative.
