Share your 2019 resolutions (and win)!

  • 1.  Share your 2019 resolutions (and win)!

    Posted 01-22-2019 08:39

As January comes to a close and we think about what the rest of the year might bring, we invite you to share your personal and professional goals and resolutions with one another. Using this thread, share your goals for 2019 and encourage one another in those efforts. Whether your goal is to spend more time doing hands-on projects, rearranging your classroom to provide flexible seating options, adding more opportunities for student-led learning, or doing mindfulness exercises to start your morning off on a positive note, we want to help renew your spirit and energy and support your aspirations for the coming year.

I will kick us off with my resolution for this year:

I am adding gratitude journaling to my daily morning routine, spending time to really think about the many people, events, and life experiences that enrich my life. It's a simple way to start with a positive attitude, and at any time during the day expressions of gratitude can be added.

The expressions of gratitude don't always need to take the form of words-mine will also be a mixture of drawings and doodlings! Each journal entry will include some kind of drawing or experimentation with a new Crayola product to expand on my thoughts (while practicing my art skills) and give thanks for the opportunity to continue to learn and grow.

Whatever your goals may be, we wish you a happy and prosperous new year. As a thank you for sharing your resolutions, everyone that comments on this post before February 12th will receive a promo code to get the art started with Crayola.

As we look to the future, think about what your dream classroom looks like-what color are the walls? What kind of seating is there? Are there twinkly lights on the ceiling? Art on the walls? Sketch it out! Everyone that shares a photo of their dream classroom design will be entered to win a special prize from Crayola!

We are looking forward to reading (and seeing!) your responses!

I am also going to start something called bullet journaling.  I found the coolest little notebooks from Studio Oh at Books a Million and plan to set goals and also add gratitude statements.  I want to look for inspirational quotes to share with my students and help them learn how journaling might help them set their own goals.

    Hi, Denise,
What a cool idea to find inspirational quotations for your students to encourage them to journal.  Sometimes all they need is a few words to get their juices flowing--and isn't that true for all of us?  If they are willing to share, it would be really cool to see pictures of their entries.

I have a goal to get back to blogging. I used to post to my blog regularly and have not posted in a while. Posting to my blog gave me a sense of belonging to a community and allowed me the opportunity to share with others. I enjoyed creating posts and reading comments. I got "blogger's block" and found it hard to find topics to post. I want to brainstorm with my colleagues what they'd like to see on my blog to help spark ideas.

I am an artist. It took me a long time to get comfortable with that one word self description. I love to create things that bring joy to others. It is an incredible feeling. I decided that is what I am good at and an artist is what I am. I need to create art. I need to share with others that the secret to life is self acceptance.
I am opening a studio space for children that encourages self expression and freedom of thought. A place to be messy and create art. It is important to embrace the love of art in children while they are young enough to be unafraid of the opinions of others.

How fantastic of you to share your thoughts, feelings, and your art, Shawna.  Your drawing would welcome ANYONE to come in and "get messy," as you state in your message.  And kudos to you for quoting Dr. Seuss!  Thank you for your piece, thank you for your plans, thank you for sharing.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to dream a little. It was fun to sketch, I did it with my 2 year old in my lap while he told me what to put in the pictures one the wall. Dr. Seuss is a huge inspiration to me and I hope to continue to spread his wisdom and His fun funky spirit. Here is a piece I painted in a dr sues inspired way. Eventually my Little lightning bugs will have lights that glow. Thanks again for letting me be a part of the community!

I hope to have some pics to share soon. I created a project to get Model Magic and after our unit on Black History, I plan to have students create a  pyramid diorama using the model magic. I am also incorporating more STEAM and flexible seating options in my classroom.

My resolution for my classroom in 2019 is to provide more opportunities to write. We have begun daily journals and the ones I purchased for my 1st graders have a blank square on each page with lines underneath to record their thoughts. What I've found during the past month is that young children find it so much easier to draw and color an illustration than to write sentences! I'll take that though! As long as they're thinking and engaged with recording their thoughts, I'm happy. I've actually noticed that their writing skills are improving which is the motivation behind my resolution.

We love hearing testimonials from the field about giving students the opportunity to illustrate their writing engages their minds and, as you have noticed, improves their writing skills.  Excellent suggestion!

My dream art room would include colorful fabric banners to display each of the 6 day rotation artwork of classes in the art room. They would be suspended from the boring white squares in the ceiling. They would reduce the glare from the bright long florescent bulbs and add excitement in the air.The side wall would contain the same colored selves to store artwork by the six day rotation and the various classes of artists from Prekindergarten to 5th grade. Art is full of color! Art is built on IMAGINATION! Crayola supports artists of all colors!

What a colorful idea, Janice--literally and figuratively speaking!  You've created a design with a clearly defined function as well as a delightful form.  In no way do I want to squelch your creativity, but after working in many different schools, I wonder if the fire codes in your school allow for draping fabric from the ceiling.  If you've checked it out already and have approval, please update us on the new look!  If not, let us know about your next plan.

One of my goals this year is to make more personal art. I am always making demonstrations and funneling my creativity into lesson planning and so forth. I am wiped out when it comes to my art. I'm not even sure what my style is anymore!

    Hi, Usha,
A lot of research and a whole lot of common sense tells us that we need to take care of ourselves if we intend to care for and teach others, so it's nice to see you honoring yourself and by extension your students with this goal.  May you rediscover your style and may it bring you great joy.

    Hello Usha,

This is is a great goal! I found that actively creating artwork while teaching allowed me to empathize with students as they navigated the creative process. Maybe even consider bringing your work in the room so students can witness your process in modeling the standards Create, Present, Respond, Connect. Congrats on setting your goal and best of luck in sustaining throughout the year!

My big resolution is to work on National Board certification. All tips welcome!
I'm doing well on my other resolution which is to bring my own art back to the classroom. I like students to see the work and time involved in making art. Sometimes things get busy with managing the classroom and all that entails, so that my art gets brushed aside. I'm making an effort to make art for me (i.e., not class demo. things) at least once a week with each class.

Carla, teachers/artist do need to feed their artistic side, and sharing with your students is a wonderful way to build stronger relationships and inspire them to feed their own artistic needs.  Bravo.
Many who have succeeded at earning their National Board Certification say that collaborating with fellow teachers, asking their advice, and generally seeking support helped them achieve this goal.    Best of luck!

Fantastic!  As a mother of a child whose elementary school artwork rarely found its way to the walls, I cherished the new art teacher who finally replaced the "selective" teacher.  She had a similar goal to yours and made it a point to make sure every child was represented in the school displays.  How proud my daughter was to pull my husband and me down the hall to see her bean mask "on show for the entire world" to see"!
We all look forward to photos of your personal art.
