    Hello everyone!

I'm Annie, your Platform Manager. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone and being a resource should you run into any questions. Feel free to send me a message here or email me at amoncure@crayola.com if I can be of any assistance.

Since this is such a big group, I thought we might take some time to introduce ourselves!

I'll kick us off: My favorite color is blue. I have been in Project Management/Member Experience roles for close to 5 years. The best career advice I have ever received is don't be afraid to try something new; the only way to continue growing professionally is to take risks and continually challenge yourself.

    Now it's your turn!

We can't wait to learn more about who you are, what you do, your favorite color, and your journey into the world of education. Consider also sharing:

    • Why creative teaching and learning matters to you.
    • How you see yourself influencing this learning community.
    • Ways you think this community will influence how you approach teaching going forward.

Hello, all!  I am an ESL teacher for Bartlett City Schools.  This is my first year as an ESL teacher, but I have been a classroom teacher for 20 years, teaching 2nd, 4th, and 5th graders.  I am so excited about using arts integration to help my English language learners become more fluent in English!  The best advice I've ever gotten as a teacher is to remember to be flexible and take care of yourself so that you can be a better, healthier person for your students and family.

Hello, ALL! I'm Ginger Slate a Visual Art Specialist that teaches 9th-12th grade Art in Crossville, Tennessee at Cumberland County High School. I transitioned to the high school level about 4 years ago after teaching grades PK-8 for 20 years. I continue to believe that all KIDS love to create so I have the best job in the world. I love all colors, but I'm partial to a certain hue of orange... GO VOLS!!! Creativity is one of the single most useful life skills I can expose to my students. I have found creative pursuits have helped me solve problems that are in no way connected to creative activities. I have had a LOT of experiences over the years and I'm always willing to share. I look forward to getting to know this community and its members through these discussions.

    Hello,
This is my 25th year teaching, 17 years as a general educator of  first and third graders and 8 years teaching art. I got the arts integration bug 15 years ago when I returned to teaching after working for 11 years as a professional artist when my children were preschool age. I realized that standardized tests were destroying creativity in the classroom for both teachers and their students. I also found that special needs and ELL students were struggling with "standardized" teaching. I attended a summer workshop that introduced arts integration techniques and have been using the approach since then, but the other teachers in the schools where I worked were reluctant to buy in to AI. This year, I an teaching at an arts Integration School with co-workers that believe in the power of art as an approach  in education. I hope that through this community, I can learn even more about AI and share the tons of lessons that I have created over the past 15 years. I especially love using art to teach reading and writing and I love teaching cultural art projects.
I love color and incorporate lots of color in my classroom, home and garden. I don't really have a favorite color, but I am drawn to blues, reds and purples. I'm looking forward to connecting with all of the amazing teachers in this community! Michelle

Hello! My name is Marly Parker. I've been teaching for 23 years. I am currently the Arts Integration Specialist/Drama Teacher at an urban magnet school. My favorite color is green. My journey into education was sparked by my dad who was an educator for 50 years! I saw how he inspired students to be engaged learners responsible for their future. I would watch him interact with students and knew this was the career for me.

Creative teaching and learning matters to me because I want my students to use all parts of their brain to engage with learning. I want them to be motivated life long learners who are interested in their personal well being and the well being of others. Creativity fosters situations of individual and group success and allows opportunities to fail which I think are important to being a well rounded learner who strives to find solutions to problems.

I hope this community helps to spark my creativity and teach me new strategies and information. I hope I can use some of my knowledge and experience to help influence others in this community.

There is power in creative learning!  This creatED site seems like the perfect place to share ideas and learn from others one swirl of color and a dose of inspiration at a time!

My favorite color is Crayola's Tropical Rainforest Green!  My eductional journey began when I was 5 years old. I would teach my dolls and stuffed friends how to read and complete math problems. I was really good at the odd numbered problems, especially since the answers were in the back of the teachers manual that I had gotten from a thrift store with my mom! As an educator, my career has fluctuated a bit, from teaching Pre-K- 3rd, to educating Exceptional Student Education K-12 and currently teaching in an amazing Kindergarten classroom.

I have always been a Crayola fan! From my first Crayola crayon to my most recent set of Crayola dry erase markers, the Crayola brand is amazing!  I truly feel that creativity and learning go hand in hand. With my husband being a Scholastic Author  and Illustrator for the book series, Third Grade Mermaid, and the way we create learning pages, to my teaching of standards in lessons at the Celebration K-8 School, we believe in the power of creativity and the fact that education and the fostering of creative minds go hand in hand.

With this colorful creatED educator community I hope to inspire others just by sharing my passion for the arts and education and learn from others beliefs in teaching.  We can all collaborate and share ideas to build each other up and extend the passion for creatively influencing others, especially students.

Moving forward, it is my desire to share all positive vibes and ideas from this online creatED community to help share ideas and inspire everyone who come to this site!

Lastly, my favorite quote is inspired from Mark Twain, basically, If you find something you love to do, then you will never work a day in your life!

Looking forward to a creatively inspired adventure on the education trail with this site filled with fellow educators and creative minded people!

    Hi there,

I'm Heather and I own a silly number of markers. For me, colouring has always been about picking the colours and applying them in big colourful swathes, so I really do need lots and lots.

My job is children's services librarian at Halifax Central- a large-ish urban public library in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In the summer I lead a family drop-in for kids 5 and up and their families and caregivers. My favourite drop-ins are art based. I'm also trying to lead my team in more art experiences for preschoolers and school-aged kids instead of prepped assembly crafts.

Besides that I'm a mom to two boys ages 7 and 10 and we love to create together! Clay, crayons, pompoms, watercolours, arcrylics, sewing, drawing- we do it all and try new art experiences all the time. Sometimes art afternoons with my kids get scaled up for a library programs later.

I'm interested in learning more about art education and how I can encourage families to engage in art together at the library and at home.

Good morning everyone, I am the Director of Family Engagement at a school in Boston. This is my 12th year at the Best school in BPS :) I get to wear my hats within my role each day. I can be very flexible, which is great, too. I really enjoy working with children and parents and I am the link between the teachers and schools, especially for the spanish speaking parents. I am hoping to gain lots of knowledge/strategies because I have a Girls Group (5th graders) and I am always looking for new things to do with them and just over all things that I can do in the school and in my Family Center.

I have been teaching via my YouTube channel for the last 3 years.  I knew that I needed to change strategies when my students wanted to look up the lessons on YouTube since they said "they understand it better."  Since then I have run my lessons that way too.

    Hey Everyone!

I'm Warren Carlyle, Founder of OctoNation - The Largest Octopus Fan Club, a 501(C)3 Nonprofit Organization whose mission it is to inspire conservation of the ocean by teaching the world about octopuses! We were spotlit by Facebook at the Facebook communities summit in February 2019 and have been recognized by numerous organizations and influencers.

My favorite color is Hank Orange!
Creative teaching matters to us because we believe that people are curious! The ocean is a curious place. The kids that I've taught had no idea that there were so many different types of octopus. I've found that by explaining to kids (and adults) that octopuses have been on this planet for hundreds of millions of years and that they all have various super powers depending  on where they live in the ocean-- they light up!

I'd love to learn ever more ways to engage creatively with Crayola (ColorCycle)  and educators for World Octopus Day 10/8 and throughout the year to inspire conservation of the ocean!

With our OctoNation community collectively  at 350,000+ members and growing-- I've always made the best decisions and grown the most when collaborating & learning from inspired people!

I am Kelly.  I am not a teacher or an educator, however I am a parent.  I work at a community health center that works with low income and homeless kids.  We have an area that does EMDR, DBT and trauma therapy for kids and adults., as well as medical, dental and other services such as housing  resources, etc.  I am always seeking out ideas and projects to implement into my work.  Many kids are left sitting in the waiting rooms or need to focus on art while discussing those difficult things.

Also, I personally have a condition called DID, which stands for Dissociative Identity Disorder.  Without going too far into specifics, I do have little parts that do not understand that it is not now time and do feel like they are still in school and not having school activities, crafts, etc causing unnecessary anxiety.  So while this is primarily for my work, I am also using it for a personal gain as well.

My daughter is 13 and absolutely loves art and science and learning and when she is not at school all she wants to do is more so I am also constantly seeking ideas to keep her busy as well.

    Hi!
My name is Nyala Edwards. I am the Branch Manager of Calhoun-Gordon County Public Library in Calhoun-Georgia. As a former teacher  I integrate  a lot of  STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programming for all ages. However in our library we call it STEAM and include Art.  Art is such a wonderful way to  be creative and is sadly lacking in a lot of public schools.

Welcome, Nyala!  How wonderful to know the Calhoun-Gordon County Public Library is using the moniker STEAM.  You are trend setters.
Here's a link to an article written by a Crayolian (for that is what we are called) from the September-October 2018 NAESP Principal magazine that you might find interesting to support your use of STEAM.
Have you seen the Crayola Design-A-Game STEAM kits?  Many librarians have shared their success stories on Twitter and Instagram about using the Design-a-Game kits in their student and family programs.  Perhaps this might be a product that supports your programming as well.
Thank you for sharing your story,

Hi!  I am a First Grade classroom teacher and I have the ESL cluster in my classroom too.  My favorite crayon colors when I was a kid was Periwinkle Blue, Sea Foam Green, Gold, and Silver.  I really like the new crayon color, Robins Egg Blue.  I feel that children can express a lot through art, and they can get creative if they are asked to show what they know through visual drawings.    I am excited to learn how to incorporate learning through art projects with my students.

    Hello, Susan,
It sounds like you promote a very colorful classroom--just what we love to read about!
We often speak of helping our students "make their thinking visible," and we find it works especially well with ELL students.  Perhaps you might appreciate viewing a recording of our spring Creativity Hour.  In it we talk about ways to use visible thinking strategies in the classroom as well as exploring ways to prepare for the new school year.
Reach out if you would like to talk about other ways to support your student learning through arts integration.  I can be reached right here on the Crayola Community!
    Best,

Hi y'all!  I am a 6th-Grade classroom teacher in Decatur, Illinois integrating creativity and the arts into our curriculum. I love seeing all the individuality in my students and I encourage them in appreciating themselves and others for what makes us special and unique. I still have Crayola arts integration materials from the 1990s (kind of vintage now!) and use many of those techniques with my students. I have returned to education after staying home with my kids now 21, 18, and 16. My favorite color is GREEN in almost all shades, but Olive and deep forest green seem to call to me most. I also love music and dance as well as the visual arts- I'm definitely not skilled at realistic drawing and for a long time, I thought I couldn't "do" art. I know better now and share that with my students. For many of our students, having that creative outlet keeps them engaged in school. Besides, it is creative minds that create inventions and the future!

Welcome to the Crayola Community, Alicia!
I appreciate how you used the term "vintage" to describe the training materials from the 90s--instead of old, it connotes how things only get better with age.  And how true that is of all things Crayola.  I encourage you check out some of the resources on the community, especially some of the Creativity Hour webinar recordings, and be on the lookout for Annie's weekly ideas.
Let us know how we can support you in your continued arts integration adventures!
